As I walked past the Robert. L Ringel Gallery in the Stewart Center, a large, white sculpture caught my eye. On January 9th, I entered the Gallery and saw many colorful tiles, and steel sculptures. My interest peaked with passion, and I eagerly walked straight into the gallery. As I walked into the gallery, many of the art pieces appeared contemporary and minimalists from afar; however, the art pieces were fabricated in details.
Ringel Gallery present Jackie Head and Samantha Holmes in "Tessellated." Head and Holmes' work mimic patterns of ancient practices, and represent the patterns in a contemporary fashion. Though, Head's work comprises of glazed, non glazed, and painted tile. All of the art pieces compose geometric forms - taking inspiration from Middle Eastern culture. Most of her art pieces are handmade, and carefully constructed into a relief sculpture. Also, Holmes work is comprised of painted steel sculptures, and gold leaf wood sculptures, and gold leaf prints. She employs patterns from religion, science, and art history to provide a retrospective persona of the material world.
Honestly, I became very intrigued by the way the artist constructed contemporary materials, and converted those materials into inspiring ancient patterns. The refreshing vibe from all of the sculptures provided a sense of anticipation within every step the audience took to view each of the sculptures. My sense of childlike wonder was exposed as I viewed all of the sculptures. Out of all of the sculptures in the gallery, my favorite was the painted steel sculpture. Overall, the sculpture moved fluently with the wall, and the composition created excitement throughout all of the woven material. In general, the experience of walking through the gallery was breathtaking.
